Francisco Carbonell Massabé (Barcelona, April 28, 1928) is a prominent Catalan painter with an impressionist temperament, recognized primarily for his vibrant Mediterranean landscapes, seascapes, and masterful treatment of light and color. He was born in Barcelona, a city where from a very young age he showed a deep inclination for drawing and painting. His academic training took place at emblematic institutions in the Catalan capital: the School of Applied Arts and Artistic Crafts (La Llotja) and the Sant Jordi Higher School of Fine Arts, where he consolidated his technical mastery of drawing and figurative painting. Throughout his career, Carbonell Massabé’s work has crossed borders, being exhibited individually and collectively in numerous galleries and cities both in Spain (such as Barcelona, Bilbao, and Palma de Mallorca) and across Europe (including capitals and major artistic centers like Paris, Munich, and Heidelberg). His painting falls within a current of impressionist and post-impressionist continuity, standing out for his work en plein air and his interest in capturing the fleeting effects of the atmosphere. He is especially famous for his representations of Catalan geography. His colorful and bucolic palette portrays with great sensitivity emblematic corners such as the Costa Brava (with a special predilection for Cadaqués and Portlligat), inland rural landscapes (such as Olot and the Guilleries), traditional urban views —like the flower market on La Rambla in Barcelona—, and mountainous panoramas (Montserrat). His oil paintings on canvas are characterized by the bold use of a wide chromatic range, dynamic brushstrokes, and careful observation of how light affects objects, sunsets, and water.
