SAINT-LOUIS, Glasslerie de

Founded in 1586 in the Münzthal valley of Lorraine and designated a royal manufacture in 1767 by decree of King Louis XV in honor of Saint Louis, the Glasslerie de Saint-Louis is the oldest glassworks in France and the absolute pioneer in the development of lead crystal in continental Europe after perfecting in 1781 the chemical formula that allowed it to challenge English hegemony. It reached its golden era throughout the 19th century through a masterful command of mouth-blowing (soufflé à la bouche), the invention of cased cut crystal (cristal doublé), and the execution of intricate geometric wheel-cutting patterns (taille à la roue) on a monumental scale. A regular purveyor to major European dynasties and royal courts, its creations adorned the gala banquets and palaces of monarchs such as Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Napoleon Bonaparte, King Charles X, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, and the Tsars of Russia, while captivating prominent figures in the arts and international high nobility who commissioned bespoke tableware and prestigious glassware services. Consistently awarded top honors at the great Paris Universal Expositions for its technical virtuosity in uncatalogued display showpieces (pièces hors-catalogue), the manufacture established unmistakable signatures such as its incised workshop diamond marks (marque au losange) and base treatments featuring starburst rosettes of up to 24 points (cul à étoile taillée à 24 rayons). Today, its extraordinary historical heritage and masterworks of fine collection are exhibited at its own heritage museum, La Grande Place - Musée du Glass Saint-Louis in Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche, as well as within the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (MAD), the Musée du Louvre, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, and various international royal holdings, solidifying the firm as an essential historical benchmark in French decorative arts.
