GÂRLA, Alexandru

Alexandru Gârlă (1888–1964) was a Romanian painter and illustrator whose career developed during the first half and middle of the 20th century, firmly rooted in the figurative tradition of the Romanian school of painting. He completed his academic training in Bucharest, absorbing the influence of the great masters of Post-Impressionism and Romanian Realism. He produced a large portion of his body of work during the interwar period and the decades following World War II, an era characterized by the search for cultural identity and the representation of Romanian folk traditions. He stood out for his depictions of traditional Romanian figures (shepherds, peasants, rural dwellers), capturing traditional attire with great fidelity (such as the căciulă or fur hat, the bâtă or walking stick, and raw wool cloaks). His style combines a solid structural draftsmanship with a restrained palette of earth tones, greens, and ochres, paying special attention to the light on fabrics and the psychological expressiveness of faces. His works were part of Romania's official artistic circuit. The stamp on the reverse of his paintings (Ministerul Cultelor și Artelor) attests that his pieces went through the state registry of the Ministry of Cults and Arts for heritage protection or export clearance.
