VESTIER, Antoine

Antoine Vestier (Avallon, April 28, 1740 - Paris, December 24, 1824) was a prominent 18th-century French painter and miniaturist, celebrated primarily for his society and court portraits, trained in the workshop of painter Jean-Baptiste Pierre in Paris and whose brilliant career led to his admission into the prestigious Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris in 1785 and formal reception in 1786, the year he also obtained the title of king's painter and enjoyed the privilege of an official residence and studio in the Louvre Palace alongside artists such as Jacques-Louis David, excelling both in large oil formats and in the refined execution of miniatures on ivory and paper to immortalize aristocrats and members of the bourgeoisie with a style characterized by psychological finesse, chromatic richness, and meticulous attention to textile and jewelry details, an artistic legacy also passed on to his daughter and painter Marie-Nicole Vestier whose masterworks are preserved today in internationally renowned museums such as the Louvre Museum, the Carnavalet Museum in Paris, the National Galleries of Scotland, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
