The Spanish painter, draftsman, and watercolorist Joan Fuster i Gimpera (Torroella de Montgrí, Girona, January 25, 1917 – September 4, 2011) is a fundamental figure in 20th-century Catalan art, remembered primarily as the creator and leading exponent of estrambotisme (strambotism), as well as for his refined seascapes and surrealist compositions; born in the Empordà town of Torroella de Montgrí, he maintained a deep vital and conceptual connection throughout his life with the landscape and culture of his native land, demonstrating from a young age a natural talent for drawing and painting that he developed through an eminently self-taught education based on direct observation from nature and a rigorous study of watercolor, a discipline in which he achieved exceptional technical mastery characterized by the fluidity of washes, chromatic control, and the subtlety of glazes; stylistically, his landscape work draws from Empordà luminism and the Catalan figurative tradition, while his more free and imaginative side reveals a clear parallel with the visionary universe of Hieronymus Bosch, the influence of Salvador Dalí, and the atmosphere of the Cap de Creus and Portlligat landscapes; in 1974, Fuster Gimpera named and formally founded estrambotisme, a unique artistic movement conceived as a playful, critical, and whimsical derivation of Surrealism that defended that any everyday element could transform into another reality without losing its own identity, challenging conventional logic through imagination; although for decades the movement remained preserved mainly in his studio, in 2004 he met the Girona painter Quim Hereu, whom Fuster named his artistic heir to guarantee the theoretical continuity and international projection of the movement; throughout his career, he was honored with distinguished awards such as the Paris Watercolorists' Salon prize (1953) and the Montgrí Medal (1986), becoming the first local artist to receive this highest honorific distinction from his hometown; widely acclaimed for his delicate and luminous watercolors of the Costa Brava (featuring marine views of ports and coves such as Palamós, Calella de Palafrugell, or Cap de Begur) and rural corners of the Empordà, his works are housed today in major public collections and institutions such as the Museu de l'Aquarel·la de Llançà (Fundació Martínez Lozano), the DOR Museum in its dedicated Estrambotisme space, the municipal artistic heritage of Torroella de Montgrí, and various private collections in Catalonia and abroad, remaining active at the easel until his passing in September 2011 at the age of 94.
