MARTÍ ARAGONÉS, Joan

Joan Martí Aragonés (Barcelona, 1936 - ibid., 2009) was a prominent Catalan painter and draftsman, widely recognized for his mastery of realistic portraiture, still life, and his connection to the renewal of figuration within contemporary art. Born in Barcelona in 1936, he showed an innate inclination toward drawing and the visual arts from a very young age, leading him to enroll in the prestigious Escola d'Arts i Oficis Artístics "La Llotja" in Barcelona. Later, he completed his formal training at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi. Alongside his individual painting work, he taught for years, passing on his technical rigor to new generations of artists. He built a solid exhibition career with regular shows in galleries in Barcelona, Madrid, and other Spanish cities, as well as participating in international art fairs and collections. Although he approached still life and urban landscapes with great skill, Joan Martí stood out fundamentally as one of the great portraitists of his generation. His mastery of anatomy, light, and character psychology allowed him to capture the essence and expression of his subjects with enormous precision. His style falls within a refined, rigorous realism of high technical quality, avoiding strict academicism to imbue his canvases with an intimate, modern, and deeply evocative atmosphere. He passed away in Barcelona in 2009, leaving behind a consolidated artistic legacy that is part of numerous private collections and contemporary art funds.
