MONTSERRAT FOJ, Enric

Enric Montserrat Foj (Barcelona, 1938) is a prominent Catalan painter and illustrator whose artistic career ranges from the golden age of comics and commercial illustration in Spain to a pictorial maturity centered on the human figure. In his early years, he combined his visual arts vocation with elite artistic gymnastics, a discipline in which he shared training sessions, exhibitions, and travel with the legendary gymnast Joaquín Blume (1933–1959). During the 1960s and 1970s, he pursued a prolific career in the publishing industry. He was part of the agency Selecciones Ilustradas (S.I.), distributing his work in the international market, and collaborated closely with Editorial Bruguera, illustrating popular action, adventure, and romance series. In the late 1970s, he decided to retire from commercial comics to focus entirely on studio painting. The core of his pictorial work is the representation of women, approached through remarkable compositional elegance, sensitivity, and lyricism. His painting is notable for its mastery of anatomy—a legacy of his athletic background and illustrator training—combined with a subtle use of light and color that endows his canvases with an atmosphere of poetry and introspective delicacy.
