Luis Ignacio García Gutiérrez, known artistically as Luis Xubero (Calahorra, La Rioja, 1944), is a prominent Spanish painter, draftsman, and sculptor, considered one of the great exponents of contemporary pictorial realism in northern Spain. He was born in 1944 in the Riojan town of Calahorra, a territory that has absolutely marked his life and creative vocation. Despite having received offers to develop his career outside his homeland, Xubero has always chosen to live and work in La Rioja, establishing an intimate and deeply affectionate bond with its landscape. His career stands out for its ironclad methodological rigor and constant dedication to artistic creation, combining the execution of large-format oils with detailed drawing and sculpture. Throughout his career, he has starred in important solo exhibitions. Among them, the anthological project titled "La Rioja, el último paraíso" (presented at the Sala Amós Salvador in Logroño) stands out in particular, for which he accumulated more than five years of uninterrupted work reflecting the natural essence, valleys, rivers, and ethnographic wealth of his land. Likewise, his work has addressed cultural themes rooted in his environment, such as the universe of wine and the mythology of Bacchus. His pictorial language falls within a meticulous realism, endowed in turn with an evocative, poetic, and intimist atmosphere. His creations stand out for an extraordinary command of light and chiaroscuro. His oils and pastels convey a sense of great visual truth—with open and solitary landscapes reminiscent of grand territorial exploration painting—complemented by hyperrealistic still lifes that reaffirm his skill as an excellent draftsman.
