His rigorous artistic training began at the legendary San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, graduating in 1980 with a specialization in Painting after mastering drawing, sculpture, and printmaking techniques. That same year, demonstrating exceptional academic promise, he passed highly competitive examinations to enter Havana's prestigious Higher Institute of Art (ISA), earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1985 and placing himself at the theoretical and formal forefront of his generation.
