TURNER, Pilly

Pilly Turner (1935 - 2015) was a prominent artist and watercolorist, internationally recognized for her pictorial work centered on rural life, landscapes, and the people of the African continent, with a special emphasis on Kenya. Developing her artistic production mainly between the 1950s and 1970s, Pilly Turner became a visual chronicler of great ethnographic and artistic value. She stood out remarkably in the watercolor technique, using a luminous and sensitive palette to capture everyday scenes, markets, settlements, and nature in the rural areas of Kenya and other regions of Africa. Her work offers a direct window into the traditions, culture, and African landscapes of the mid-20th century. She was a member of the UK-based charitable association "East Africa Women's League." Paintings and watercolors signed by Pilly Turner are highly appreciated in the Eastern and African art market, as well as by collectors specialized in colonial and post-colonial inspired art in Africa, being considered pieces of great documentary and aesthetic interest.
