SUBIRANA, Ismael

Ismael Subirana (Olot, 1937) is considered one of the most faithful continuers of the Olot School of Landscape Painting during the second half of the 20th century. Remaining true to the founders of the movement (such as Joaquim Vayreda and Josep Berga i Boix), Subirana works directly from nature (en plein air). His works capture the changing light, meadows, beech forests, and rivers of the Garrotxa region. His painting stands out for its gentle brushwork, a serene use of oil, and a palette dominated by nuanced greens, ochres, and seasonal autumn tones typical of the Olot landscape. Following his debut at the Sala Busquets in Barcelona (1963), his work gained recognition in Catalan galleries specializing in traditional landscape painting (such as Sala Rusiñol and Galeria Armengol) as well as in private collections dedicated to Catalan genre art. Catalan art critics have described him as a sincere and honest painter true to reality, avoiding "easy effects" or quick tricks. His painterly practice is grounded in deep respect for the landscape he contemplates every day.
