ROLLAN, Jordi

Jordi Rollán Lahoz (Barcelona, January 28, 1940) is a prominent Catalan painter, draftsman, and printmaker, fundamentally recognized for his mastery in the representation of the female figure and his personal evolution toward a synthesis between figuration and abstraction. Born in Barcelona, he showed a strong inclination toward drawing from an early age. In 1954, he abandoned his commercial studies to enroll in the prestigious Escola d'Arts i Oficis Artístics "La Llotja", where he trained for five years. He also complemented his learning by attending the Royal Artistic Circle of Barcelona (Reial Cercle Artístic) and the Saint Luke Artistic Circle (Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc). In 1965, he received a scholarship from the Royal Artistic Circle that allowed him to travel through various European countries (such as France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy), closely studying the works of the great masters in international museums and enriching his visual language. His official solo debut took place in 1966 at the emblematic Sala Jaimes in Barcelona. From that moment on, his career took off remarkably, accumulating more than two hundred solo exhibitions both in Spain and abroad. His international shows include exhibitions in the United States, France, Italy, Monaco, Uruguay, and an intense period of exhibitions in Germany and Switzerland (including the joint project "Dalí - Rollán: Grosse Katalanische Meister"). In his beginnings and throughout much of his career, the central axis of his work was the female figure, treated with a highly personal sensitivity. Although he experimented intensely with absolute abstraction for a period of three years, his mature style evolved toward a free and dynamic territory situated between figuration and abstraction. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated great versatility, working with oil, acrylic, mixed media, collage, sculpture, and graphic work (such as lithography). His compositions stand out for a marked formal search and a vibrant use of color. In addition to his pictorial work, Rollán has collaborated in the fields of artistic design, poster art, and commercial illustrations. His work has been the subject of multiple specialized monographs and forms part of prestigious collections and catalogs of contemporary art.
