LAURENT, Jean-Pierre

Jean-Pierre Laurent (Paris, November 26, 1920 - 1998) was a prominent French landscape painter, watercolorist, and lithographer, strongly tied to the post-impressionist tradition of the second half of the 20th century. He was born in Paris, a city where he developed much of his life and work. He completed his official art studies at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he consolidated his mastery of drawing, perspective, and the handling of light. His work falls within a trend of impressionist and post-impressionist continuity. He specialized in depicting urban landscapes, river scenes, and picturesque corners of France. His oils, watercolors, and lithographs capture atmospheric changes, the seasons of the year, and reflections of light on water with great sensitivity. He paid special attention to the landscapes of Paris — frequently portraying the bridges and banks of the Seine, the docks, and the traditional streets of the French capital — as well as various fishing villages and rural landscapes in the Norman provinces (Port Normand). His graphic work and prints form part of prominent public collections, represented in institutions such as the Cabinet des Estampes at the National Library of France in Paris. Today, his signed watercolors and lithographs are highly prized pieces for collectors of 20th-century European graphic art and landscapes.
