MATEU RIBERA, Lleonard

Lleonard Mateu i Ribera (Palma de Mallorca, 1920 - 1979) was a prominent Mallorcan painter and draftsman, recognized primarily for his mastery in capturing island landscapes, seascapes, and coastal scenes of the Balearic Islands. He was born in Palma de Mallorca in 1920, amid an era of great artistic effervescence in the archipelago. His training developed in connection with the traditional figurative and landscape currents of Mallorca, drawing from the great school of local masters dedicated to exalting the light and geography of the island. Throughout his career, he participated in various exhibitions in Mallorca and nationwide, consolidating himself as an artist of solid reputation within the Balearic pictorial circuit of the mid-20th century. His work falls within post-impressionism and landscape realism. He stood out remarkably in the use of oil painting and drawing, endowing his compositions with a great chromatic atmosphere. His artistic catalog is dominated by picturesque corners of Mallorca, solitary coves, traditional ports with fishing boats, and rural views of the island, always characterized by a loose, sincere brushstroke deeply attached to nature.
