Robert van Audenaerde was born in Ghent in 1663. He received his initial artistic training from Frans Cuyck van Myerop and Jan van Cleve. In 1685, he traveled to Italy, visiting various cities and interacting with different schools of painting. He finally settled in Rome, where his presence in 1689 is documented in archives and in engravings of the banks of the Tiber. In Rome, he worked in the workshop of Carlo Maratta and primarily based his own work on Maratta's paintings. According to a contemporary document—a letter from Father S. Resta, superior of the Philippines in Rome, to Giuseppe Ghezzi, secretary of the Accademia di San Luca—Maratta enormously valued Audenaerde's artistic skills and considered his graphic works, predominantly reproductive, to be on par with his own designs. Following Maratta's death in 1713, Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Barbarigo commissioned Audenaerde to create a genealogical work on his ancestors (Épithalame généalogique). In 1723, he returned to Ghent and continued this work there. In 1732, a collection of 160 plates that he had edited was published in Padua, titled Numismata virorum illustrium ex Barbadica gente. Robert van Audenaerde passed away in Ghent in 1743 and was buried in the church of Saint Bavo. Among his most important engravings are the series The Triumphs of Caesar (1692), based on a work by Andrea Mantegna.
