The Embrace
This deeply moving and masterly terracotta sculpture by Kanchana Srinaksuk (Kö-Ken), conceived as a unique direct-modeled piece executed in Paris in April 1995, depicts a tender fraternal or protective scene of an older child holding and warmly embracing a younger one on his lap, standing an impressive $38\text{ cm}$ in height; the work is distinguished by exceptional mastery in the expressive handling of clay, devotedly capturing the serene, affectionate gesture of both Asian-featured figures, the intricate modeling of hands, feet, and hair textures, alongside a warm, earthy patina finish on the tree-stump base, a museum-quality creation that synthesizes the emotional lyricism of Eastern traditions with the formal rigor of contemporary Western figurative sculpture, incised by the artist on the base.
SRINAKSUK, Kanchana
Kanchana Srinaksuk (Thailand / France, b. c. 1970), artistically known as Kö-Ken, is a distinguished Franco-Thai sculptor, ceramist, and former art galerist who combines a rigorous technical mastery in terracotta modeling and bronze casting —awarded in 2004 by the Société d'Encouragement aux Métiers d'Art (SEMA) and decorated with medals across several fine art salons— with specialized art market expertise acquired at the Institut d'Études Hardouin (IDETH) in Paris; after managing her own art gallery in the 20th arrondissement of Paris for fifteen years (Galerie Kö-Ken), exhibiting her body of stylized torsos and female nudes reflecting a refined synthesis between Eastern organic lines and European modern abstraction, she relocated her studio in 2021 to Mamers (Sarthe) to align her independent practice with local architectural heritage preservation, with her works held in private and institutional collections across France, Belgium, and Europe.
