Allegorical female bust with draped shawl and headscarf

4.000 €

This sensational 54 cm high monumental bust, incisively signed by the noted Belgian sculptor Anton Nelson (1849–1910) —pseudonym of Antoine Joseph Van Den Kerckhove—, represents an outstanding Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) / Symbolist artwork carved circa 1900 in a sophisticated polychrome combination of fine-grained white marble and honey-and-sienna veined alabaster. The work captures fin-de-siècle technical virtuosity by juxtaposing the translucent softness of the marble across the facial features and chest with the dense organic veining of the alabaster sculpted for the draped shawl knotted at the front and the headscarf gathering the hair, achieving a striking chromatic and tactile harmony of symbolic and romantic resonance. Imbued with the idealization and poetic elegance characteristic of Nelson's allegorical figures, the bust is distinguished by the subtle facial modeling, delicate curls escaping the headpiece, and the introspective mood of the gaze, seamlessly bridging European academic tradition with the fluid decorative rhythms of Art Nouveau. Autograph signed on the reverse alabaster base ('Nelson'), this sculpture retains an impeccable state of preservation and a rare monumental scale, placing this type of output by the artist within premier auction houses and fine private collections specializing in 19th and early 20th-century European decorative sculpture.

NELSON, Anton

Antoine Joseph Van Der Kerckhove (also known as Antoine Joseph Nelson van den Kerckhove or under the artistic pseudonym Anton Nelson) was a Belgian sculptor born in Brussels on May 13, 1849, and died after 1910. Coming from a family with a sculptural tradition, he was the son of sculptor Augustin Van den Kerckhove. He initially trained with his father and continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. He produced realistic figurative works in bronze, marble, stone, and ivory, ranging from civic monuments and historical or allegorical themes to elegant Art Nouveau busts (frequently signed under the pseudonym "Nelson" or "Ant. Nelson"). Starting in 1890, he established his residence and main studio in Paris, while alternating work stays in London. He participated in important international exhibitions, such as the Antwerp Universal Exhibition in 1885. He is the author of historical statues and reliefs such as those of Charles Martel and Pépin de Herstal (1884), as well as the low reliefs Duel de la Place Verte and Assassinat de Sébastien La Ruelle located in the Palace of the Prince-Bishops of Liège. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium house such characteristic pieces of his as the bronze portraits of sculptors Sébastien Slodtz and Lucas Faydherbe (1882).
