Sailboats at Sunset
This small-format watercolor by Catalan artist Salvador Castellà (Canet de Mar, Barcelona, 1960) is an evocative and poetic seascape in which the artist displays exceptional technical mastery in handling water and pigments on paper. The composition depicts a marina or dock at sunset or dawn, dominated by the stylized masts of moored sailboats that vertically slice the horizon against a sky infused with golden undertones, neutral grays, and deep bluish hues. Castellà’s style in this piece stands out for an expressive, atmospheric, and impressionistic synthesis, grounded in an impeccable wet-on-wet technique that yields subtle tonal gradations, combined with precise calligraphic brushstrokes and unpainted white paper reserves to suggest luminous reflections on the boats and water. Regarding his influences, his pictorial language draws from the rich tradition of Catalan watercolor and Mediterranean landscape painting, as well as the technical instruction of his mentors Francisco Oliver and Alberto Alís, while aligning with the fluid gestural freedom of contemporary international and Anglo-Saxon watercolor art. Backed by distinguished accolades, including the Gold Medal at the Barcelona Maritime Museum Exhibition, the work of Salvador Castellà is represented in key institutional holdings and public collections, such as the Maritime Museum of Barcelona and the Town Hall of Béziers (France), as well as prominent private collections of contemporary art across Spain, France, Italy, Andorra, and Japan.
