Sailboats at Sunset II

350 €

This small-format watercolor by Catalan painter Salvador Castellà (Canet de Mar, Barcelona, 1960), conceived as a perfect pendant to the previous seascape, offers a closer and more intimate view of a harbor dock at sunset. The composition sets in the foreground the elegant mass of moored boats and sailboats, whose masts and deck lines slice across an atmospheric background of warm ochre, golden, and hazy gray tones, poetically reflecting upon the rippled surface of the water. Castellà’s style stands out for a synthesizing, impressionistic technique dominated by a masterful handling of color washes, wet-on-wet application to diffuse the backgrounds, and precise, incisive strokes of dark pigment paired with subtle reddish accents that define the physical structures of the vessels, all while preserving clever reserves of white paper to capture direct highlights on the hulls and the water's surface. His influences draw directly from the rich marine tradition of Catalan watercolor and Mediterranean luminism, alongside the solid academic and intuitive foundation imparted by his mentors Francisco Oliver and Alberto Alís, while incorporating the gestural freedom and fluid staining characteristic of contemporary European watercolor art. Backed by extensive international accolades, notably including the Gold Medal at the Barcelona Maritime Museum Exhibition, the works of Salvador Castellà are represented in key institutional and public collections such as the Maritime Museum of Barcelona and the Town Hall of Béziers (France), as well as prominent private collections of contemporary art throughout Spain, France, Italy, Andorra, and Japan.
