In front of a cup of tea

3.500 €

This work titled "In front of a cup of tea", executed in 1992 on an 81 x 70 cm canvas and signed "J. Carbonell" in the lower left corner, constitutes an exceptional piece fully belonging to the painter's period of full artistic maturity. The scene presents an intimate and introspective atmosphere where a young woman rests her head on her hand in a contemplative posture before a restrained foreground still life comprising a teapot and a cup in deep cobalt blue. Stylistically, the painting exemplifies Carbonell's mature Neo-Fauve and Post-Impressionist idiom, characterized by expressive, fluid, and vibrant brushwork that prioritizes the synthetic power of color and the structure of light over superfluous detail, capturing with great lyricism the Fauvist chromatic lesson of Henri Matisse and Mediterranean luminosity through striking contrasts between the warm tones (oranges, ochres, and terracottas) of the background and garments against the serene cold blues. Executed precisely in 1992—a milestone year marked by the international projection of his oeuvre driven by the endorsement and interest of prominent institutional figures such as Juan Antonio Samaranch, Marquess of Samaranch and President of the International Olympic Committee—this piece reflects the artist's highest technical refinement, plastic freedom, and poetic view of everyday life, establishing itself as a crowning work within his mature figurative output of exceptional value for fine art collecting.

CARBONELL, Jaume

Jaume Carbonell was born in Barcelona in 1942 and passed away in the same city in 2010. He trained at the Conservatori d'Arts Sumptuàries Massana and the Conservatori de les Arts del Llibre in Barcelona. However, it was a journey through Mediterranean Europe that led him to discover the luminosity and shared characteristics of the civilizations born around the sea, elements which he masterfully reflected through a highly personal style bridging Fauvism and Cubism. His first exhibition took place in Barcelona in 1966, and since then, his work has been exhibited in cities across Spain, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Among the institutions that own and exhibit his pieces are the International Olympic Committee Museum (Lausanne), the Girona Museum of Art, the Biblioteca de Catalunya, Banco Sabadell, La Caixa, the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Port Authority of Barcelona, and the Xylon Ex-Libris Museum (Buenos Aires)...
