The Silent Violin

4.000 €

In "The Silent Violin" (1994), a monumental oil on canvas measuring 98 × 98 cm signed by Vladislav Dmitrijev, we witness one of the crowning compositional achievements of his mature period, where the plastic-expressive tradition of Slavic neo-impressionism converges with a restrained spatial geometry inherited from his architectural background. The work articulates a profound existential meditation on the transience of life, old age, and the inexorable passage of time, personified in the figure of the veteran violinist engrossed in thought. Opposite him, the worn wall clock and the frozen landscape beyond the window reinforce an atmosphere of impermanence and everyday melancholy, set beneath the watchful, enigmatic gaze of a cat acting as the guardian of silence. Amidst this reflection on the brevity of human existence, the presence of the silent violin upon the wooden table assumes an almost metaphysical dimension: the instrument transforms into the supreme symbol of the everlasting, suggesting that while life fades, art and the miracle of music transcend time itself. The technical execution demonstrates an undeniable mastery of impasto and gestural brushwork, echoing the tonal boldness of Central European Expressionism and the luminous subtlety of the Moscow School, where the icy blues of the exterior contrast harmoniously with the earthy warmth of the violin and the sculptural volume of the human figure. Executed during the key decade of the 1990s, as the artist consolidated his European standing and established his creative base in the Czech Republic, this piece transcends mere genre painting to stand as a work of intense poetic and philosophical depth, bolstered by the masterly ambition of its square scale, the compositional complexity of its three narrative planes, and its extraordinary presence, enhanced by a sumptuous Dutch walnut burl frame.

DMITRIJEV, Vladislav

Vladislav Dmitrijev was born in Russia in 1952 and graduated from the Moscow School of Architecture in 1976, a solid academic background that endows his work with a rigorous mastery of space, perspective, and light. After holding his first exhibitions in Russia and Ukraine starting in 1975, he relocated to the Czech Republic in 1986 and established his studio in Prague, a city that became the poetic and thematic epicenter of his artistic output. His oil technique, rooted in a refined neo-impressionist style with Slavic origins, stands out for delicately capturing the nostalgic atmosphere of old Prague, offering the viewer everything from intimate street-level compositions to complex aerial panoramas or bird’s-eye views. From the 1990s onward, his work achieved consistent international projection through solo and group exhibitions in art centers and galleries across the Czech Republic, Spain, Andorra, Italy, and France. Throughout his professional career, he has received distinguished international awards, including the European Prize for Fine Arts presented by The European Union of Arts in 2004, the Gold Medal at the Villelaure Autumn Salon in France, the Silver Medal from the Fédération Nationale de la Culture Française, the Menton City Award, and first prizes Antonello di Messina and Filippo Juvarra in Italy, as well as honors granted by the International Academy A.L.I.A.S. in Melbourne. Dmitrijev’s creations enjoy widespread recognition in the private art market and are held in prominent private collections in Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Spain, Andorra, Israel, Japan, and the United States, including those of prominent international figures such as former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and businesswoman and social icon Ivana Trump.
