Passallís de Grabulosa (La Garrotxa)
This piece by Catalan artist Pere Danés Berga, titled Passallís de Grabulosa (La Garrotxa), is an oil on canvas measuring 60 x 53 cm depicting a colorful equestrian and landscape scene set along the water's edge, where a group of riders and their mounts advance and rest beneath the trees of this picturesque spot in La Garrotxa. The composition stands out for its dynamic post-impressionist approach to light and color, with loose, impasto, and highly fluid brushstrokes constructing the anatomy of the horses and the lushness of the natural surroundings. Danés Berga combines figurative mastery with a luminous palette dominated by warm tones of ochre, yellow, and terracotta in the autumn foliage, balanced by the bluish and greenish nuances of the water, which skillfully reflects the surrounding landscape and vegetation. The artwork conveys a serene, naturalistic atmosphere through a direct, expressive brushwork that highlights both the contained movement of the horses and the country scenery's ambiance, encased in a sumptuous classic gold-leaf frame complemented by a dark blue and gold inner mat.
DANÉS BERGA, Pere
Pere Danés Berga (La Vall de Bianya, Girona, 1945) is a Catalan painter and watercolorist closely linked to the landscape tradition of the Olot School. Trained at the Olot School of Fine Arts, he based his learning on the intensive practice of plein air drawing from life and direct observation to capture the variations of outdoor light—knowledge that allowed him to acquire a solid technical mastery of both oil painting and, most notably, watercolor, a discipline in which he specialized due to the fluidity, rapid brushwork, and transparency of the pigment. His figurative style is characterized by the agility of his loose brushstrokes and a remarkable sensitivity in capturing the atmosphere, luminosity, and chromatic subtleties of the rural surroundings of La Garrotxa, its farmhouses, medieval villages, equestrian motifs, and urban perspectives. Throughout his extensive career, he has presented numerous solo and group exhibitions in art galleries and venues across Olot, Girona, Barcelona, and other Catalan towns, establishing a strong presence in regional figurative painting circuits. His artistic output is represented in public and institutional collections such as the Garrotxa Museum in Olot and various municipal holdings across the region, as well as forming part of numerous private collections throughout the peninsula, remaining an active exponent of contemporary Catalan landscape art.
