Untitled artwork (cataloged by the artist under number 2154 and dated 1990), executed on canvas belonging to Andreu Martró's fifth creative period, known as "Semblances anímiques". The painting depicts a seated female figure of striking presence and sculptural monumentality, rendered in an introspective pose through softened geometric outlines and firm contours characteristic of his mature figurative language. True to his mastery of pictorial procedures, Martró applies a mixed media technique featuring subtle glazes and tactile material surfaces that impart physical density to both skin and drapery. The palette of ochres, earth tones, neutrals, and warm greys dispenses with decorative distraction to focus expressive energy on the human form, conceived not as a traditional individual portrait but as a symbolic, timeless presence aimed at psychological introspection. This piece synthesizes the artist's full creative maturity in the early 1990s, where tactile richness and formal restraint translate inner mental states with the poetic monumentality highlighted by art critic Rafael Santos Torroella.

MARTRÓ, Andreu

Andreu Martró i Fustañà (Sant Quintí de Mediona, Barcelona, 1941 – Terrassa, Barcelona, 2012) was a prominent Catalan painter, printmaker, and educator. Born into a farming family, his early connection to the land permanently shaped his artistic output through color, forms, and textures, establishing one of his core life pillars alongside family and his sociocultural environment. Following the hardships of the post-war years, he moved alone to Barcelona at thirteen to pursue his passion for drawing. Graduating in Pictorial Procedures and Mural Painting from the Barcelona School of Applied Arts and Artistic Crafts (Llotja) —where he won the graduation prize in 1969— and earning his degree in Painting from the Sant Jordi Superior School of Fine Arts, he balanced creation with dedicated teaching, first working with children in 1965 and later serving as a professor in Llotja's Department of Pictorial Procedures and Mural Techniques. In 1969 he married fellow artist Mireia Català, his key analytical and emotional anchor, with whom he had two children, Roger and Elisa. His oeuvre evolved from early Informalism and social dissent during late Francoism toward a poetic, symbolic, and tactile figuration centered on the human form, rural landscapes, and everyday objects. Beginning in 1972, he participated in numerous international exhibitions at venues including the Spanish Institute in London, the National Museum of Fine Arts of Chile, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and The Florida Museum of Hispanic and Latin American Art. Honored with awards such as First Prize at the III Fira Nacional del Dibuix (1978), his public masterworks include the sanctuary altar murals at the Shrine of Our Lady of Mercy in Reus, with his art preserved in major private collections and museums such as the Museum of Modern Art of Catalonia and the F.C. Barcelona Museum. Reflecting on his powerful artistic language, art critic and historian Rafael Santos Torroella wrote: "He constructs forms and figures of striking monumentality—forms and figures that act as monuments dedicated to the concerns that preoccupy him".
