This outstanding oil on panel by Manuel Gándara Bonnín (Barcelona, 1902 – 1960) stands as a masterful example of the naturalist landscape painting and regionalist-accented Post-Impressionism that flourished in Catalonia during the first third of the 20th century. With a highly accurate dating of circa 1935, the composition captures with remarkable virtuosity the vibrant light filtering through a dense, impastoed wooded mass onto a rural path in the Vallès or Prat de Llobregat region, where a evocative procession or line of figures in traditional attire can be discerned. Formally, Gándara Bonnín's brushwork unfolds with a rich, thick, and deeply tactile body, applied through direct impasto dabs that impart a tactile relief and exceptional luminous vibration to the board's surface. His pictorial language is rooted in the great plein air tradition of the Olot School and the guidance of tutelary figures such as Joaquim Vayreda, Modest Urgell, and Eliseu Meifrèn, weaving a harmonious dialogue between academic drawing construction and the atmospheric lyricism of nature painted from life. From an art critical and appraisal perspective, the work is distinguished not only by its refined chromatic technique—dominated by ochres, olive greens, and earth tones enlivened by small accents of pure color on the figures—but also by its excellent state of preservation and its fine period frame in carved and gilded wood with a burlap matting, which substantially enhances its market value within specialized art galleries. It is worth noting that Manuel Gándara Bonnín was a prolific artist who exhibited regularly at Barcelona's most prestigious art galleries, including Sala Parés, Galerías Laietanes, Sala Busquets, and Sala Gaspar, as well as in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions; today his work enjoys prominent institutional representation in the holdings of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Barcelona Provincial Council museum network—including the Museu Abelló in Mollet del Vallès and the Museu de Granollers—, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Madrid, and various renowned public and corporate collections.

GÁNDARA BONNÍN, Manuel

Manuel Gándara Bonnín (Barcelona, 1902 – Barcelona, 1960) began his artistic training at the Sant Jordi Superior School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and in private academies around the Eixample district, learning under masters who inherited the great 19th-century Catalan academic tradition and early Modernisme, from whom he acquired a rigorous command of life drawing and composition. Deeply influenced by the naturalist landscape painting of the Olot School and the mark left by masters such as Joaquim Vayreda, Modest Urgell, and Eliseu Meifrèn, he adopted plein air practice, focusing his work on countryside subjects, wooded paths, and pilgrimage scenes in the Vallès and Prat de Llobregat regions. His pictorial style belongs to a regionalist-accented Post-Impressionism defined by the use of a direct, dense, and heavily impastoed brushstroke that adds rich texture to the surface, a skillful handling of light filtered through foliage, and a restrained palette of ochres, greens, and earth tones. Throughout his career, he exhibited regularly at Barcelona's most prestigious art galleries, including Sala Parés, Galerías Laietanes, Sala Busquets, and Sala Gaspar, while taking part in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions and official competitions held by the Barcelona City Council. Today, his work is represented in prominent institutions and museums such as the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Barcelona Provincial Council museum network —including the Museu de Granollers and the Museu Abelló in Mollet del Vallès—, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Madrid, and various public and private Catalan collections.
